November, November

November result: 42k words on Orion's Pieces, 2k over my target. I'm pleased. Yes, I know some have written close to 100k, but I'm not them. This was likely my most productive month ever, especially the second part, once I got things going. So, hooray. It's also been a great distraction from the novel-on-submission-I-need-to-check-mailbox-again stress. I actually managed to keep this out of my mind, at least most of the time--so that's worth another hooray. Now November is over and I've deflated like a burst balloon. I'm tired, and the weasels have returned, doing extra time on their weaselling, telling me my novel will never sell so I need as well not bother. But I'm not going to cave it (at least, not yet). I hope I can finish the first part of the novel before Christmas, which may be hard as we have several family visits this month, but I only need another 15k (I think) to finish. So, that's the plan. And over the holidays I'll start

Novel-in-Progress

I've killed a lot of people today... They died in a pointless battle started by somebody who believed they were doing the right thing.  And now my character and I have to pick up the pieces and figure out what to do next.

Checking in

So, it's been a month since the last post? Wow. Time flies when you sit in the same space staring the same letters on the same white screen. The letters do change order and concentrate in different arrangements, but that's about all the change I get. Oh yeah, sometimes it's Major Tom trying to bite my fingers as I type and other times it's Earl Grey. But anyway. It's been a month since my novel is out on submission. I know it's about five minutes in publishing time, but I can't help getting antsy. With the holiday season, I'm not likely to hear anything before January. I'm trying to brace myself for the wait, but it's haaaaard... I've decided to try to do NaNoWriMo, as a way of 1) distracting myself, and 2) giving Book 2 a flying start. Well... I did manage to distract myself. The start has been less than flying. Actually, it's been awfully difficult. I'm guessing part of it must be coming from being unsure if the whole t

A Little Holiday

We went to Faro, Portugal, for a four day break. It was truly lovely. We wandered around, had lots of good food (mostly fish, not to mention the delicious pastel de nata) and wine (porto!), listen to music (Fado!),  and generally just chilled. It was a good break. I actually managed to relax, which is rare. And I've started on a new short story for a Codex contest. I don't quite know where it's going, or even if I'll finish it, but I like the opening, and it's a nice feeling to be working on new words.

Edits Done

Edit's on Orion's Shadows are done and off to the agent. Hopefully, he won't mind the instances where I went against his advice. I've also added the opening quotes for both parts, something I had been thinking about earlier. Now, if the agent likes the result, we will draft a list of editors to send this to--and then the waiting will start. From what I've heard, anything from a month to a year... With Christmas coming, I doubt it will be a month. I hope it won't be a year, though, because I'll go mad if I have to wait that long. Now I should be sensible and start on a new, unrelated project.  But I'm not sensible. So I'll either start on the sequel, or sit around pulling hair till I hear from the publishers. Wish me luck.
